On the command line in AutoCAD, type CURSORTYPE and set it to 1. On the command line in AutoCAD, type GRAPHICSCONFIG and turn off hardware acceleration.

I found this worked in AutoCAD 2011: disable the tooltips - ROLLOVERTIPS=0.
